New permanent ban on miniature motorbikes (monkey bikes) with unsafe design features replaces existing ban

Published

A new permanent ban on minature motorbikes (monkey bikes) with unsafe design features came into effect on 20 August 2011.

Consumer Protection Notice No. 24 of 2011 was published on the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments. As of 20 August 2011, the former permanent ban on miniature motorbikes with unsafe design features (Consumer Protection Notice No. 14 of 2011) was revoked and replaced by this new permanent ban.

The new permanent ban ensures that miniature motorbikes which were not intended to be captured by the regulation no longer fall within its scope. Now, only miniature motorbikes with inadequate safety features (as specified in the permanent ban) and which are powered by an internal combustion engine are subject to the ban.

For more information, please refer to the new permanent ban and accompanying explanatory statement on the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments.
